EDITORIAL
the journey of achievements

The better manipulation of the posture of Orthopaedic Surgery started in early 1972. Though initial approach was hazardous, a magnificent outlook overcame the situation. Dr. RJ Garst himself turned the possibilities into success. Meanwhile we came across the year of silver jubilee of the setting stone of RIHD (recently named as NITOR). In the present perspective, the updating and progress of our discipline must be calculated in minutes to show us better hopes and aspiration of a bright future. It is now left to the senior Orthopaedists to carry on the process of development. I certainly hope everyone would agree to this.

The under graduate course curriculum prevailing in the country is not time-befitting for the students of MBBS class and the necessity of teaching traumatology is undermined amongst the practioners and in the community. Appropriate measures for rectification must be taken early.

Chittagong Medical College Hospital, situated in the port city of Bangladesh and the second in position in the country, serves a wide catchment area of orthopaedic trauma is not in a position to render quality services due to limitations. Need for expansion of the surfaces and facilities etc. is urgently felt. A separate trauma Hospital is a right and claim of the time.

Very recently MS ORTH students have been enrolled in Chittagong Medical College under Chittagong University Faculty of Medicine. This underlines the necessity of a uniform guideline of teaching and training to be formulated by the concerned authorities of orthopaedic surgery.

CORR DIGEST
Chapter 2 (Concluding)

 Short HISTORY of RIHD

Enthronement in the new building of RIHD: After completion of the desirous habitation the ins and outs of Shahid Suharwardy Hospital complex were shifted to the new building in the later part of 1978 and earlier part of 1979. Though the arrival was not a pompous one, a new life was infused for the country and the people under a radiant leadership of Dr RJ Garst who was successively adorning the post of Project Director. He realized his own vision to attain a success of diligent dream. Mr. & Mrs. Garst along with a handful of Orthopaedic Surgeons of the country equipaged and fabricated the hospital.

Departments: Various departments were established to carry on the programes as designed. The departments were categorized into phases:

Phase-I:  Organization (Development works)

Phase-II: a) Educational (Post graduate courses, MS ORTH, D ORTH)

               b) Physical Medicine including brace and limb center.

               c) Post graduate nursing education.

Phase-III: Outreach

               a) to establish orthopaedic training in the country.

               b) to arrange equipments via volunteer funds from abroad.

               c) decentralizing orthopaedic service from Dhaka.

Phase-IV: Establishment of Hospital departments such as Blue, Yellow, Red units headed by consultants Dr. MS Talukder, Dr. FR Aolad and Dr. Ayjaz A Khan repectively.

Visiting skill personalities were attached with the academic disciplines and university examinations etc.

Various technical collaborations such as a) ODA (Overseas Development Administration), b) OO (Orthopaedic Overseas), UK, c) WOC (World Orthopaedic Concern), d) WHO (World Health Organization), e) NUS (National University of Singapore) and many other were enrolled in the project of development.

Separation of Dr. Garst from the institute was in early 1981. Most of us were surprised and bewildered. We were left with agonizing feeling of void on the of his departure.

The day of remembrance with feelings of gratitude is the day of conferring the citizenship of Bangladesh in the month of February 1999 to Mr. & Mrs. Garst. At least this may offer some consolation to recognize his long sacrifices they rendered and sweats they shed on the soil of Bangladesh.

( This CORR digest is rendered in honour of Mr. & Mrs. Garst )

          homage to Arthur Eyre Brook

          Md. Manzurul Islam

An outstanding personality and a leader in orthopaedic surgery who is known to many of us during the period 1977 - 1986 working in RIHD, Mr. Arthur Eyre Brook who died on 16 August 1999 at the age of 91. He visited Bangladesh five times and helped us in many ways to make our postgraduate programme a success. He conducted MS Orth & D Orth examinations several times.

He was a man of brilliant career and was a distinguished student. He graduated in 1932 and earned the fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons in 1934. He served in UK, USA, South Africa and mostly worked with sick children.

He served as President of British‑Medico‑Chirurgical Society in 1968, President of British Orthopaedic Association in 1972, one of the founder members of World Orthopaedic Concern in 1975 and was associated with many other organizations.

Retirement in 1973 gave an opportunity to develop his interest in orthopaedic in the developing countries. We saw him as a man of tireless energy, a careful, painstaking surgeon who paid enormous attention to detail us in the matters like conference, OT, library, clinical classes etc.

He was a great surgical teacher to us. He used to communicate to many of us till his death and always emphasized on the development of orthopaedic surgery in our country. He will be remembered for his compassion and caring, integrity, drive and high endeavor.

May his soul lie in eternal peace.
